AMMAN - Queen Rania of Jordan on Monday brought together thousands of Jordanians at a solidarity brunch and march in support of Palestinian human rights in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Around 2,000 women responded to an invitation by Queen Rania's Jordan River Foundation to attend a benefit brunch in Amman, paying 20 dinars (28 dollars) for a frugal meal whose proceeds will go to the Palestinians, organisers said.

During the event Rania signed a petition called "Hand in hand with the Palestinian people" addressed to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan calling for "immediate intervention" to end Palestinian suffering at Israeli hands.

Some 2,500 Jordanians, including members of the royal family, added their names to the petition and joined a two-kilometer (1.25 miles) march led by the queen to hand in the message at the Amman headquarters of the UN children's agency, UNICEF.

Men, women and schoolchildren holding Palestinian and Jordanian flags and placards bearing the articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights took part in the march.

Rania, 32, is the world's youngest queen and of Palestinian origin like nearly half the five-million population of Jordan.
