Apologies from an American
I opposed the war in Iraq, because I listened to and read the opinions of many Middle Eastern experts and scholars who warned us that this would be too great a task says Jeanni Schipper.
Dear Editor,
I have been watching the news unfold with horror in recent weeks to see the way this 'war' in Iraq is being (mis)handled by the Bush Administration. Consequently my heart goes out to the Iraqi people every day, and I want you to know that there are a lot of Americans who feel the way I do. Please accept my apology for the reprehensible behavior of those soldiers in the prison and their horrible mistreatment and inexcusable torture of Iraqi prisoners. Please accept my apology for the innocent Iraqis who have died during the insurgents flareups. Please accept my apology for the lack of post-war planning and restoring basic services of power and water, following the end of the bombing campaigns. Please accept my apology for the arrogant and misguided approach of our President who has bungled the post-war efforts nearly every step of the way and continues to do so.
Along with many Democrats in America, I opposed the war in Iraq, because I listened to and read the opinions of many Middle Eastern experts and scholars who warned us that this would be too great a task. If you can accept my sincere apology on behalf of the American people, please try not to hate all Americans because of the actions of our government. You must understand that the Bush administration is not representative of most Americans. We are also facing problems in our country with his administration, and our goal is to defeat him from re-election in November.
Sadly, many Americans are unaware of the problems facing the Iraqi people because they rely on the biased media cable TV networks (CNN, FOX and MSNBC) for their news. The negative stories go unreported here for the most part, and death counts and casualties are simply not shown. As result, countless Americans are now turning to the internet to get their news from countries all over the globe in order to read about stories that are not reported here in the U.S.
However, the good thing about democracy is that we can change this administration by our votes in the upcoming November Presidential election. I hope you will remain hopeful for the future of the Iraqi citizens to truly be free in the near future, with support from America and the United Nations, and prospects toward a democratic government of your own choosing. I really wish you a speedy end to the occupation and hardships, and hope we can help you achieve a peaceful and rewarding life as free people in the very near future.
Sincerely,
Jeanni Schipper (housewife, mother and proud Democrat)
