Algeria tightens automobile import rules

Ban of all imports of spare parts not bought in their country of origin from November 2 will help fight counterfeiting.

ALGIERS - Algeria will ban all imports of vehicle parts not made by automobile manufacturers and their subsidiary companies, in a bid to clampdown on counterfeiting, the trade minister announced Monday.

"As of 2 November no spare part that is not bought in its originating country will be allowed into Algeria," said El Hachemi Djaaboub during a meeting with ministers in the capital Algiers, a national agency reported.

The measure is an attempt to fight "against the importing of counterfeit spare parts, especially those from Asian countries," the minister explained.

In 2008 Algeria's imports of automobile parts reached a value of 291 million dollars. The same year, 5.7 million dollars worth of counterfeit car parts were seized in the country.
