TEHRAN - Iran boasts some 30,000 women skiers, the president of Iran's female ski association said Friday.

There are currently 220 female ski teachers in the country, said Afsaneh Shemshaki.

Young women are turning more and more to the sport with dozens of ski resorts popping up, including four around Terran.

The best known are the resorts by Dizine and Shemshak, an hour north of the capital.

For several years, ski trails were separated by ropes to prevent males and females from mixing, but despite the occasional intervention by police, men and women now mix freely on the slopes.

In Tehran, more than 20 ski magazines have hit newsstands.
