BAGHDAD - A US soldier has died of wounds he sustained Monday morning when Iraqi gunmen attacked an army convoy west of Baghdad, the US military said.

"A US soldier was critically wounded this morning near Habbaniyah by small arms fire. He was evacuated by air and later died of his wounds," a US military spokeswoman said.

"Three Iraqis were captured. They are being questioned about the incident," she said.

She said the soldier belonged to the 82nd Airborne Division that operates in western Iraq.
