TRIPOLI - Thirty women cyclists from Europe, Asia and the Arab world peddled out of Lebanon on Sunday headed for the Palestinian territories via Syria and Jordan, in a campaign for regional peace.

"I take part every year in this event," Marta Sara, a 65-year-old German peace activist, said in the port city of Tripoli before crossing over into Syria.

"It's civilised and it serves a purpose. Some of those taking part know nothing about Arab societies. Now they are starting to get to know the problems of this region," she said.

The cyclists, some wearing the keffiyeh Palestinian scarf around the neck, started their ride in Beirut on Friday, for the international "Women for Peace" event which has been held since 2004.

Before setting off from Tripoli, they chanted peace songs in Arabic, French, Spanish and English.
