Saudi forces accused of firing across Yemen border

Zaidi rebels accuse Saudi forces of targeting crowded market of Hassama with heavy machine-guns.

SANAA - Yemen's Shiite rebels on Monday accused Saudi forces of firing across the border in support of the Sanaa government in its offensive against the rebels.

The Zaidi rebels, known also as Huthis, said Saudi forces had targeted the crowded market of Hassama with heavy machine-guns, in a statement posted on the rebels' website, without giving a specific date for the incident.

There was no immediate official reaction.

The rebels said the alleged attack was a "very dangerous development and a blatant aggression against the people of Yemen," adding that it "revealed the depth of Saudi growing intervention in Yemen's internal affairs."

It did not, however, report any casualties.

The Huthi rebels have also in the past accused neighbouring Saudi Arabia of providing military support to the Sanaa government, following the army's launch of its Operation Scorched Earth on August 11.

Riyadh has in the past rejected the charge.
