Morocco king announces minor government reshuffle

King Mohammed VI appoints current education minister Saaid Amzazi as government spokesman and Othman El Firdaouss as minister of culture, youth and sports, replacing Hassan Abyaba who held both posts.

CASABLANCA – Morocco announced Tuesday a minor cabinet reshuffle six months after downsizing the government.

King Mohammed VI appointed current education minister Saaid Amzazi as government spokesman and Othman El Ferdaous as minister of culture, youth and sports in the presence of Prime Minister Saad Dine El Otmani at the Royal Palace in Casablanca.

Both posts were previously held by Hassan Abyaba who was sacked following several blunders, according to local media.

The last cabinet reshuffle reduced the number of jobs to 23 but the foreign, finance and interior ministers remained in their posts.

The appointments came as Morocco is battling the coronavirus pandemic, ordering April 7 all citizens to wear face masks in order to curb the spread of the virus.

The Moroccan monarch and other ministers were wearing face masks during the appointment ceremony as social distancing was respected as part of the preventive measures imposed by the government against the pandemic.
