Morocco mulls resuming normal diplomatic representation with Germany
RABAT - Morocco's foreign ministry said on Wednesday that the Kingdom is considering resuming bilateral cooperation and normal diplomatic representation with Germany after positive statements and constructive stances recently expressed by the new German government.
It added on Twitter that "Morocco hopes that these statements will be backed up by actions to reflect a new state of mind and mark a new beginning in the relationship based on clarity and mutual respect."
The new German government, led by Olaf Scholz, has expressed its interest in mending diplomatic ties with the North African Kingdom.
It also supports Morocco's Sahara project, an issue that caused a rift between the two countries in March when Rabat recalled its ambassador to Berlin for consultations in protest at what it described as Germany's "destructive attitude" towards the kingdom's position on the Sahara issue.
The German foreign ministry said in a press release that it saw Morocco's proposal for the Sahara as key to resolving the conflict in the region.
"Morocco made an important contribution to this agreement in 2007 with an autonomy plan," it said.
Berlin has recently sent reconciliatory messages to Morocco. Most recently, in early December, the German embassy declared that it was "ready to establish a future partnership with the Kingdom".
Germany announced that it was preparing an imminent declaration on its relations with Morocco after the embassy expressed its desire to resume "good and traditionally broad diplomatic relations."
