Morocco rejects Algeria’s unfounded ‘spoliation’ accusations

A Moroccan diplomatic source says Morocco has acted with transparency and coordination with the Algerian authorities regarding their embassy in Rabat as part of an expansion project which started in 2022.

RABAT - Morocco categorically rejected on Monday Algeria’s accusations of an alleged project to "spoliate" its property in Rabat.

A Moroccan diplomatic source described the allegations as "unfounded" and stressed that they showed "an unjustified spirit of escalation."

These statements come in response to remarks by the Algerian Foreign Ministry, which had condemned Morocco's actions, describing them as a 'provocations' as part of an alleged 'spoliation operation' of property belonging to its embassy in Rabat.

The Moroccan diplomatic source stressed that Morocco had acted with transparency and coordination with the Algerian authorities as part of an expansion project which started in 2022. This project involved the acquisition of a vacant space on the grounds of the Algerian embassy in Rabat, after the latter's move, and adjacent to the offices of the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The same source insisted that Morocco had taken these steps openly and in collaboration with the Algerian authorities, who had responded to these initiatives. However, the procedure is currently at a standstill, with Morocco favouring a de-escalation approach.

It should be noted that the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also taken similar steps with other foreign representations in the district in order to expand its premises.

This new verbal escalation comes in a context of tense diplomatic relations between Algiers and Rabat, marked by the severance of ties in August 2021.
