Moscow says US has betrayed Kurds in Syria

Kremlin tells Kurds to withdraw from Syrian border or be mauled as Syria President reassures Russian counterpart his complete refusal of any invasion on his country’s land under any pretext.

MOSCOW - The Kremlin said on Wednesday that the United States had betrayed and abandoned the Syrian Kurds and advised the Kurds to withdraw from the Syrian border as per a deal between Moscow and Ankara or be mauled by the Turkish army.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the comments to Russian news agencies. He complained that it appeared that the United States was encouraging the Kurds to stay close to the Syrian border and fight the Turkish army.

Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the situation in northern Syria in a phone call on Tuesday with his Syrian counterpart, Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian presidency said in a statement.

Putin told Assad that any agreement between Turkey and Russia will focus on fighting all kinds of terrorism and dismantle any separatist agendas on the Syrian land.

Assad also reassured Putin his complete refusal of any invasion of Syrian land under any pretext, adding that Syria will continue to fight terrorism on Syrian land by all legitimate means.
