Morocco arrests two French nationals wanted by INTERPOL
MARRAKECH - Morocco’s police arrested on Sunday two French nationals in Marrakech subject to international arrest warrants issued by the French authorities and red notices from the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL).
The searches and investigations carried out by the Marrakech judicial police prefectural service, in collaboration with the services of the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST), managed to determine the location of the two French nationals (28 and 38 years old), before a reinforced security operation led to their arrest in Marrakech, according to a press release from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN).
The arrest of the two suspects took place as part of a coordination and cooperation operation between the Moroccan security services and the French security authorities, added the same source.
According to preliminary information from the investigation, the two suspects are involved in a premeditated murder as part of a criminal network that targeted, on May 14, 2024, employees of a French penitentiary establishment, said the statement, adding that this operation facilitated the escape of the French prisoner of Algerian origin, Mohamed Amra, arrested last weekend in Romania.
The two defendants are also suspected of having committed other criminal acts as part of an organized crime gang, including illegal possession of firearms, robberies, fraud, attempted murder, as well as acts of vandalism and destruction of public and private property.
The suspects were placed in police custody as part of the judicial investigation ordered by the competent prosecutor's office, while the French security authorities were informed of the arrest to initiate the necessary procedures for extradition, within the framework of international cooperation.
This security operation is part of the strong bilateral collaboration between the Moroccan security services and their French counterparts in common security issues, it concluded.
