Tunisian film "Silences of the Palace" ranked first on list of 100 best films for women in Arab cinema

The film investigates issues of gender, class and sexuality in the Arab world through the lives of two generations of women.

TUNIS - Tunisian feature film "The Silences of the Palace", directed by the late feminist filmmaker Moufida Tlatli, has been ranked first on the list of the 100 best women's films throughout the history of Arab cinema.

The selection was made by more than 50 film critics and unveiled Saturday at the Aswan International Women's Film Festival, which is held in its fifth edition from June 24 to 29, 2021.

Released in 1994, the film investigates issues of gender, class and sexuality in the Arab world through the lives of two generations of women.

"The Silences of the Palace" won several awards including the special mention of the jury of the Golden Camera at the Cannes Film Festival 1994, the FIPRESCI prize at the Toronto International Film Festival 1994, the Golden Tanit of the JCC 1994, the award for best feature film at the African, Asian and Latin American Film Festival in Milan 1995 and the Golden Tulip at the International Film Festival of Istanbul 1994 as well as the award for Best Actress for Hend Sabry, which was her first role.
