KUT, Iraq - Five officers from the Iraqi security forces were killed and 48 others wounded in clashes with insurgents in the town of Sueira, south of Baghdad, early Wednesday, medics said.

"We have received the bodies of five Iraqi security officers and 48 injured," said the director of the hospital casualty wing in the nearby city of Kut.

The Kut region is overwhelming Shiite Muslim and has been largely quiet since the end of an uprising by radical leader Moqtada Sadr earlier this year.

In northern Iraq, two Iraqis suspected of trying to bomb a pipeline in the country's oil-rich north and a Kirkuk policeman were killed Wednesday, police said.

"Two Iraqis wearing traditional Arab dress were killed as they tried to take a bomb out of their car and plant it near a pipeline just after 9:00 am (0500 GMT)," said Jawdat Abdullah, the top policeman in Al-Dibis, north of Kirkuk.

Lieutenant Uday Saddam Alyan, 28, was gunned down as he left his office in Kirkuk to return home at around 10:00 am (0600 GMT), said Lieutenant Colonel Hussein Abdullah al-Sabawi.
