Jordan & Ukraine to boost two-way trade

Jordan, Ukraine sign cooperation accords during Kuchma visit

Accords call for opening of trade offices in each other's capitals, for two countries to examine joint projects, for cooperation on scientific, technical issues.

AMMAN - Jordan and Ukraine signed two cooperation accords during a visit to Amman by Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma, Jordanian officials said Wednesday.

The first accord calls for the opening of trade offices in each other's capitals and for the two countries to examine joint projects.

The aim is to boost two-way trade, which was estimated at 92 million dollars in 2001, with the lion's share of 80 million dollars made up by Ukrainian exports to Jordan, officials said.

A separate accord, signed late Tuesday in the presence of Jordan's King Abdullah II, calls for cooperation on scientific and technical issues.

Kuchma and the king later held talks focused on the Middle East situation, calling for Israeli forces to withdraw from reoccupied Palestinian areas to clear the way for a revival of the peace process, officials said.

Ukraine officially backs a comprehensive Middle East peace settlement based on Israel's withdrawal from Arab territories occupied in 1967. It is home to three million Muslims and hosts a Jewish community of half a million.

Kuchma was later Wednesday to wind up his Middle East tour that has also taken him to Syria and Lebanon.
