This December, Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra region will come alive with the sights, sounds and spirit of the UAE’s coastal heritage as the 3rd Al Yasat Festival returns to Al Sila waterfront from December 12 to 21.

Organised by the Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority, Abu Dhabi Sports Council, and Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club, in strategic partnership with the Emirates Council for Balanced Development, the festival promises a celebration of tradition, sport and family entertainment.

Designed over two weekends, from December 12 to 14 and December 19 to 21, the schedule ensures maximum access for visitors, creating a vibrant social and cultural atmosphere where families and communities can immerse themselves in Emirati heritage and maritime culture.

At the heart of the festival lies a rich programme of competitions and activities that span land and sea. From traditional dhow sailing to falconry, fishing championships, beach sports and heritage games, Al Yasat Festival blends authenticity with modernity to offer something for everyone.

Highlights include the Al Yasat 60ft Dhow Sailing Race, the Gaffai 22ft Dhow Sailing Race, the Al Yasat Regatta, the Al Hadad Falconry Championship, and the Al Yasat Sheri Fishing Championship, with total prizes exceeding AED7 million.

Other attractions include swimming, beach football and volleyball, running races, carrom and domino tournaments for men and women, traditional costume contests, cycling, cooking competitions, and a variety of traditional games and recreational activities.

Visitors can explore a traditional market showcasing Emirati crafts, heritage products and cuisine, while children’s zones provide games, competitions and family-friendly entertainment. The festival also hosts daily awareness activities, folk art performances, and live demonstrations of traditional handicrafts, highlighting local talent and deepening cultural appreciation.

“The Al Yasat Festival reflects Abu Dhabi’s continued commitment to safeguarding our maritime heritage and celebrating its role in society,” festival organisers said.

“It is a unique platform where tradition, sport and community come together, embodying the UAE’s identity and promoting social cohesion.”

The festival is designed not only to entertain but also to foster tourism, support economic activity in Al Sila City, and promote UAE islands and coastal communities.

By encouraging youth participation in marine activities and providing platforms for artisans and productive families, Al Yasat Festival advances the vision of preserving and sustaining heritage for future generations.

From the thrill of dhow races cutting through the waves to the grace of falconry displays and the bustle of traditional markets, the Al Yasat Festival promises an unforgettable celebration of Emirati culture, community, and the enduring bond between the UAE and the sea.
