Gargash: UAE reaffirms diplomacy, rejects confrontation with Iran

The adviser to the UAE President says the Gulf state remains committed to political solutions and diplomacy amid regional tensions.

ABU DHABI - Anwar Gargash, an adviser to the United Arab Emirates president, said on Wednesday that the UAE remained committed to political solutions and diplomacy amid regional tensions, while stressing the country's right to defend its sovereignty.

The UAE said it had not sought conflict and had worked to avoid it, adding that relations between the Arab states and Iran should not be based on confrontation.

Gargash called for mutual respect, good neighbourliness, and respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries in the region.

He noted that the UAE supports de-escalation efforts and diplomatic initiatives aimed at ending the current crisis, which has now lasted more than two and a half months and disrupted maritime security and energy markets.

The comments reflect the UAE’s consistent diplomatic stance throughout the conflict: a combination of firm self-defense and openness to dialogue. The country has faced repeated Iranian attacks on its territory and critical infrastructure since late February, including incidents involving ADNOC facilities.

Despite these challenges, senior UAE officials have repeatedly expressed support for political solutions, including ongoing ceasefire negotiations involving the United States, regional mediators, and other international actors.

Gargash’s remarks come as Turkey, Pakistan, and other countries intensify diplomatic efforts to find a negotiated end to the war. The UAE has been actively engaged in these back-channel discussions while maintaining strong cooperation with international partners to protect its airspace, maritime routes, and economic interests.

Analysts see Gargash’s statement as a clear message that the UAE prefers diplomacy but will not compromise on its core security and sovereign rights.
