Sharjah Literature Festival returns with stories that connect
SHARJAH, UAE –
The Emirate of Sharjah is preparing to host the second edition of the Sharjah Literature Festival from January 5 to 11 at University City Hall.
Held under the theme “A Community Woven Through Tales”, the week-long festival aims to bring audiences closer to Emirati literary creativity, foster dialogue between authors and readers and showcase the latest trends in writing and cultural expression.
The event, organised jointly by the Emirates Publishers Association and the Sharjah Book Authority, will feature 24 events, including author discussions, panel debates, poetry evenings and musical and cultural performances.
A book fair will run alongside the festival, presenting new literary releases from Emirati publishers, while 14 educational workshops on Arabic calligraphy, storytelling and creative arts will offer hands-on learning experiences.
Literature as a thread of memory and connection
The festival highlights the power of literature to shape societies and preserve collective memory.
“Literature is where memory, imagination and identity are enshrined. It preserves our stories and deepens our understanding of one another, while building a sense of belonging that transcends generations. Through the Sharjah Literature Festival, we celebrate the power of words to connect communities, enrich minds and catalyse a healthy, compassionate society,” said Chairperson of the Sharjah Book Authority Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan al-Qasimi.
A platform for Emirati creativity
Executive Director of the Emirates Publishers Association Rashid al-Kous confirmed preparations for the festival are complete. “The Sharjah Literature Festival serves as a cultural platform that supports Emirati creativity and highlights local literary achievements. It also creates an enabling environment for publishers and authors and provides an interactive space that encourages promising literary projects that enrich the cultural and creative landscape of the emirate,” he said.
Kous added that the festival promotes dialogue, openness, and diversity. “Through its comprehensive and well-curated programme, the festival reaffirms the vital role that culture plays in building awareness and shaping identity. It is a key driver in strengthening the presence of culture in public life, building bridges between generations and fostering innovation and creativity.”
A rich programme for all
In addition to panel discussions and performances, the festival will offer workshops, entertainment activities and a showcase of handmade products reflecting local heritage. Organisers aim to create a space where stories, creativity and community intersect, offering a cultural experience that celebrates the UAE’s literary and artistic talent.
The Sharjah Literature Festival is expected to further establish the emirate as a hub for thought, creativity and knowledge, cementing the role of literature as a unifying force in society.
